MUSC’s eConsult program connects primary care providers with specialists directly through the EHR, giving patients faster access to specialty guidance without the wait for an in-person referral. PCPs submit a clinical question through Order Navigator, a specialist reviews the case and returns recommendations, and the primary care team can move forward with treatment — often without the patient ever needing to leave the primary care setting.

Program Benefits
How It Works
  1. PCP submits an eConsult via the EHR (search “eConsult” in Order Navigator).
  2. Patient verbal consent is obtained. Patients are informed that:
    • Insurance will be billed
    • Coverage varies, and co-payments may apply
    • Uninsured patients may pay $70–75 out-of-pocket
  3. The specialist reviews the request, documents recommendations, and returns them to the PCP’s inbox.
